Buying an E-Bike on Amazon: A Pre-Purchase Checklist
Last updated: September 2026
E-bikes on Amazon come from many brands and sellers, and listings often leave out details that matter. Use this checklist to verify what you are buying, who is selling it and what to do when the box arrives.
1. Read the specifications, not just the headline
- Battery: find the volts and amp-hours and work out watt-hours; see battery range explained.
- Motor: rated (continuous) watts and torque, not only "peak" watts; see e-bikes for hills.
- Top assisted speed and throttle: these decide its class; see e-bike classes.
- Brakes, weight, maximum load and rider height range: see load ratings and our Fit Guide.
- Safety certification: check exactly what is claimed and verify it; see UL 2849 explained.
If a figure that matters to you is missing, treat it as unknown, not as "fine".
How complete are listings? A look at 22 of them
We recorded the specifications stated in the Amazon listings of the 22 bikes we feature (checked 2026-09-29 to 2026-10-02). Many important details are simply not stated:
| Detail | Listings that state it |
|---|---|
| Certification named (UL 2849 / UL 2271) | 14 of 22 |
| Brake type | 17 of 22 |
| Rider-height range | 5 of 22 |
| Motor torque | 7 of 22 |
| Rated (continuous) motor watts | 12 of 22 |
| Maximum load | 5 of 22 |
| Bike weight | 2 of 22 |
"Not stated" means the listing text we recorded does not give it, not that the bike lacks it. Ask the seller or check the manual for anything missing.
2. Check who sells it and who stands behind it
- Sold by and shipped by: see whether the bike is sold by the brand's own store, by Amazon or by a third-party seller.
- Warranty: what does it cover (frame, motor, battery), for how long, and whom do you contact? Get it in writing.
- Returns: check the return policy shown on the listing; return windows and conditions can differ by seller and item, and large items can be costly to send back.
- Support and parts: can you buy a replacement battery, charger and brake parts later? Look for a manufacturer website and a way to contact them.
3. Read the reviews and questions with care
- Read the most recent and the critical reviews, and look for patterns (battery, brakes, assembly, support) rather than single complaints.
- Be wary of reviews that only praise the delivery or the price and say nothing about riding.
- Use the "Questions & answers" for details the listing leaves out, and ask your own question before buying.
- A new model may have few reviews; that is not bad in itself, but it means less evidence.
4. Plan for delivery and assembly
- Large boxes may need someone to help carry them inside. Check the bike's weight and the packaging size.
- Most e-bikes arrive partly assembled. Set aside time, check you have the tools and a manual, and consider having a local bike shop assemble and tune it.
- Keep the box and packing materials until you are sure you are keeping the bike, in case of a return or a warranty claim.
5. When the box arrives
- Inspect the box and the bike for damage before you sign off or throw anything away; take photos if something looks wrong.
- Check that every part and the charger from the parts list is there.
- Tighten bolts as the manual says, check the brakes and the tires' pressure, and confirm that the wheels and handlebars are secure.
- Charge the battery with the supplied charger and follow the first-charge instructions.
- Take a short test ride somewhere quiet, with a helmet, before using it for real.
- Register the warranty if the manufacturer asks you to.
Follow the manufacturer's manual first; it overrides this general list.
